Chapter Three

Rafe climbed the steps from the basement. Darkness had fallen outside the living room windows. Adam should be home soon. No, this still wasn’t home for Adam although he and Adam had reconnected. It had been a week of sex, laughs and… something more.

Rafe wouldn’t enjoy the night without feeding first. New Year’s Eve was a celebration although the sentiment certainly didn’t describe his mood. Not only was the week almost at an end, but he worried about the club, the vampires and Theron’s preoccupation with the crime victim.

Adam had to go back to DC on the second of January so they’d invited a few friends over. Tonight was going to be casual. People Rafe could be himself around, who wouldn’t ask him how he was doing. Life went on. He’d buried his mother, made it through the holidays and he’d figure out tomorrow when it came.

He sighed and glanced at the clock. A few hours remained before guests arrived. Drinking regularly from Adam had him bursting with energy. He hadn’t felt this good in months. However, reality was looming. Fucking Adam and trolling The Catacombs wasn’t going to help him when Adam left and he went back to work. Physical fitness was as crucial as mental fitness. A week with Adam had fucked him on both levels. It had made him gluttonous and he wasn’t ready for the feeding-fest to end. He wasn’t ready to lose Adam again.

Adam’s truck pulled into the drive. Rafe smiled as Adam stepped from the cab. He crossed the room and met him at the door. “You’re early.” He leaned against the doorjamb and crossed his arms over his chest.

“Do you want me to go?” Rafe smiled. “I want you to come but that will happen later.”

Adam brushed past and headed toward the kitchen. “I heard from Theron this afternoon,” Rafe said.

“Is he coming tonight?” Adam took a glass from the cupboard and poured two fingers of scotch into the glass.

“Yes, I convinced him he needs time away from the club.” And not just because of the crime connection or because of the sex. Theron was known as Tac in the club and when in his world, he was the quintessential king of kink. He played rough and hard. A vampire whore and he didn’t offer apologies or excuses. He didn’t have to. He wasn’t crossed and he wasn’t questioned. He liked to fuck and used The Catacombs to feed his insatiable appetite.

“But we have a small problem. Nolan is bringing a friend. His name is Vance.”

“Vampire or human?” Adam asked.

“Human.” Rafe grinned and waggled his brows.

“Someone from the club?”

“No.”

“Is that smart? With everything going on shouldn’t you, Nolan, Jeremy and especially Theron insulate yourself a bit from society? Prying eyes are looking for anything.” He held up his thumb and finger with about an inch between them. “Vampires are this close to being outed. Our party isn’t the place to bring a stranger.”

“Theron knows. This is the test. Nolan wants to bring Vance into the club.
